INTRODUCTION

Throughout the year, certain days and seasons are used to celebrate or commemorate particular events in Jesus’s life or ideas related to Christianity. Some of these are obvious or well-known: other less so. And this may be because the ideas themselves or the language used is years or even centuries old.

These pages are intended to go through the main days and seasons of the Christian year and to give a brief explanation of each. Where appropriate, there is as attempt to give the derivation of the ideas and to support this with suitable references to passages in the Bible.

Here the Christian year is taken to start with Advent which is the period of preparation before Christmas.
