Confirmation Classes

  • At baptism, a person is received into the world-wide Christian Church. If the person is old enough, then they are asked if they are ready to accept the commitment this entails. Clearly, if a baby or small child is being baptised, they cannnot respond properly. So instead, the parents or god-parents effectively make the vows on their behalf.

Sometimes, having been through Young Church (or Sunday School, or whatever it is called), people in their late teens feel they have sufficient understanding of what faith entails and they wish to make for themselves the vows made on their behalf at baptism. This does not happen to everyone — others may need some experience of adult life and come to faith in their later years.

Declaring acceptance of what was done on one’s behalf is usually done at a service of confirmation — that is confirming that what was done previously was appropriate. The Methodist Church usually combines confirmation with the recception of the person into membership of the local church — and that membership can, of course, be transferred to another local church if the person moves away from the area.

From time to time, Solihull Methodist Church runs confirmation classes which attempt to explore what it means to commit oneself to the Christian faith. These are for anyone who who wishes to seek confirmation and membership or for anyone who simply wants to understand what the commitment means.
