ASCENSION DAY
After his resurrection on Easter Day, Jesus was seen by many of his followers [Luke 24: 13-32; Luke 24: 36-43; John 20: 26-31; 1 Corinthians: 15: 3-8].
This happened over a period of 40 days [Acts 1:3-4]. After this time, the disciples witnessed Jesus being lifted up and cloud removing him from their sight [Acts 9-11].
Ascension Day marks this event and is the day (approximately) 40 days after Easter Day. Note that in the ancient system, you count “one” for Easter Day, “two” for the following Monday, and so on until you reach 40.
Hail the day that sees hime rise, Alleluia!
Ravished from out wistful eyes! Alleluia!
Christ, awhile to mortals given, Alleluia!
Reascends his native heaven: Alleluia!
Charles Wesley (1707-1788)
