Christian Year
ADVENT SUNDAY

Advent Sunday is the first of the four Sundays in Advent and is the start of the period of Advent which is a time of prepartion before Christmas Day.
Some churches use an Advent wreathe or Advent crown. This usually consists of five candles together with some additional decoration. Four of the candles are (say) red and the fifth is (say) white.
On Advent Sunday, one of the red candles is lit. On the second Sunday in Advent, two red candles are lit. And so on, with one additional red candle lit of each Sunday in Advent.
Finally, on Christmas Day all four red candles are lit, and so is the fifth candle which represents Jesus himself.
