Advent Sunday is the first of the four Sundays in Advent and is the start of the period of Advent which is a time of prepartion before Christmas Day.

Some churches use an Advent wreath or Advent crown. This usually consists of four or five candles together with some additional decoration. If a fifth candle is used, it is white and represents Jesus. There are no fixed colours for the other four candles: red is assumed here, but purple and pink seems to be common alternatives.

On Advent Sunday, one of the red candles is lit. On the second Sunday in Advent, two red candles are lit. And so on, with one additional red candle lit on each Sunday in Advent.

Finally, on Christmas Day all four red candles are lit, and so is the fifth candle (if there is one) showing Jesus’s arrival.
