SUNDAYS in ADVENT

IMG

These are the four Sundays which come before Christmas Day and they are part of the season of Advent which is a time of preparation.

Themes for church services during this time usually relate to the (first) coming of Jesus. These include: prophecies about the expected Messiah [Isaiah 7:14; Isaiah 40:1-11; Micah 5:2]; the visit of the angel Gabriel to Mary [Luke 1:26-38]; and John the Baptist (as herald for Jesus) [Luke 3:1-17; John 1:19-28].

Often, on one of the Sundays, a service of “lessons and carols” is held concentrating on Bible readings related to the coming of Jesus and carols (songs) on similar themes. Usually the final reading is the opening of John’s gospel [John 1:1-14].
