Christian Year
SHROVE TUESDAY

Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday and the start of Lent. It is perhaps not really a Christian festival although the name comes from the word “shrive” meaning to seek forgiveness for sins, which was done prior to Lent starting.
It was also a time for revelry before the austerity of Lent. The tradition still exists of making pancakes on this day which perhaps derives from making use of ingredients that were to be given up for Lent.
