GOOD FRIDAY

IMG

Good Friday is the Friday of Holy Week and it remembers Jesus’s death on the cross [Matthew 27:27-54; Mark 15:21-39; Luke 23:26-48] and his being placed in the tomb [Matthew 27:57-61; Mark 15:42-47; Luke 23:49-56].

Churches usually have special services on Good Friday to remember Jesus’s suffering and death. They may also organise a “Walk of Witness” through the local community.

The word “Good” here means “holy”: the words “God” and “good” have similar derivations in English. So the day can be thought of as “God’s Friday”.

When I survey the wondrous cross,
On which the Prince of Glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were an offering far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

Isaac Watts (1674-1748)
