Confirmation and Becoming a Member

As The Methodist Worship Book (1999) notes: Baptism marks entry into the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church of which the Methodist Church is part.

When babies or young children are baptised, various promises are made for them by their parents and/or godparents. This is clearly because such children are not yet able to understand what these promises mean.

When older, people who have been baptised when much younger may wish to make the commitment for themselves. This can be done at a service of confirmation. Here they are confirming that they accept what was said on their behalf at baptism. In particular, they are declaring publicly that they belong to Christ and to the whole people of God.

In the Methodist Church, confirmation is also linked with being received into membership of the Methodist Church (both at the level of the local church and at a national level). Becoming a member is an act of Christian commitment and discipleship available to anyone of an age to understand the commitment and hence decide for themselves.

Membership for people means belonging to a specific local church where they usually worship and which they support. Membership is a requirement for those who participate in their local Church Council or Circuit Meeting, as here they are acting as Managing Trustees according to Charity Law.

From time to time, Solihull Methodist Church offers membership classes for those who are interested in becoming a member or who simply want to find out more. These classes explore the Christian faith and try to explain what the important step of Christian commitment entails.

The minister is pleased to talk to anyone who would like to take the step of becoming a member. You can contact the minister on *****-****** or by going via the Church Office on 0121-705-7367 or by using our contact page here.
